International Microsurgery and Hand Surgery Training Center

This center, jointly sponsored by the Repair and Reconstructive Institute of Clinical Medicine of Shandong Province and the Clinical Hand Surgery Center of Jiangsu Province, offers fellowship to overseas microsurgeons, hand surgeons, plastic or orthopedic surgeons, or trainees of above-mentioned specialties with focused exposure to microsurgery and hand surgery during a period ranging from 1 to 6 months.

The center is directed by Dr. Zeng Tao Wang, with the co-director of Dr. Jin Bo Tang. Annularly, the center accepts up to 4 fellows. The duration of training is 1 to 6 months. Interested personals should write to Dr. Zeng Tao Wang at wzt@sdu.edu.cn or his corresponding junior colleague Chao Chen (email: 853029430@qq.com ), with a letter of interest, a CV, and a letter of recommendation (preferably from the department chair). Please specify the intended length of stay and intended starting time.

Clinical Fellowship:

During the training period, the fellow will be arranged to a clinical team and join the team in daily surgical cases and on call. We have a large number of emergency and selective microsurgery cases in Shandong. The fellow is welcome to join or observe surgeries in other clinical teams for any cases that he or she is interested in, including observing or join in replantation and microsurgical tissue transfers in the evening. When a fellow is majorly focused on microsurgery, he or she is encouraged to stay in Jinan, Shandong in the entire fellowship period.

While the fellow is interested in including a period of more focused exposure to hand surgery, he or she will be arranged to stay in the Jiangsu Clinical Hand Surgery Center in Nantong for 1 to 3 weeks.

The center provides stipend to the fellows from economically-needed regions to supplement or cover the living cost. For the fellows from developed countries or regions, the center will provide hotel accommodation in the first week after arrival, so the fellow can look for his or her rent apartment or decide to continue to stay in a hotel, which is paid by himself or herself. The center will provide each fellow welcome gift money that he or she can use for sampling a variety of Chinese cuisines in the town at the time of arrival (Surely, you will find a lot delicious food everywhere!).

Jinan is ideally located, 90 minutes by high-speed bullet train south from Beijing. The hometown of Confucius is only half hour from Jinan by highway. The city itself is a City of Spring (you will find clear springs everywhere in the city). We encourage you to make day trip to Beijing for sightseeing during the weekends while you stay with us. High-speed trains run every hour between two cities. We are sure that our colleagues will take you to visit those must-see spots around the city of Jinan as well!

Nantong is just across the Yangtze River North of Shanghai, 1 hour drive by highway or 1 hour through bullet train from Shanghai Hongqiao Train Station. Nantong has a special geological location. It is on the north bank of Yangtze River and by the Pacific Ocean in Yangtze River Delta region. A few days or a week visit will enable you to sample this elegant city, which is typically in the Yangtze River downstream.

Arrival and transfer to Jinan:

We suggest you fly to Beijing capital airport. Through an easy transfer by taxi (approximately 200 RMB or $30), or efficient light rail plus subway, or bus to Beijing South Railway Station, you can take a high speed train from Beijing to Jinan West Station in about 90 minutes. Take a taxi or call us for a pickup to your hotel. There are also direct flights from Beijing to Jinan. The flight time is less than 1 hour.

We suggest you leave China through Shanghai, and stop by Shanghai or its nearby cities for 2-3 days for a visit and sightseeing. Jinan to Shanghai is connected by high-speed trains as well, and takes 3.5 hours.

Visiting Nantong during after arrival at Shanghai can be made through frequent bus service (every 20-30 min, 60 miles, 1-1.5 hour ride), from the Long-distance Bus Station right at the north exit of Shanghai Railway Station or through high-speed trains from Shanghai Hongqiao Train Station to Nantong West Station, where subway in Nantong can transport you to the center of Nantong where the hospital is located. In Nantong, you can see light-up of the 7 km riverbank surrounding the old city center at night. Nantong connects to Pudong International Airport through frequent bus service, that takes 2 hours to the Pudong International Airport.

There are also frequent high-speed trains (direct, or with a transfer) from Jinan West Station to Nantong West Station. The journey time is 3.5 hours. This is the easiest way to get to Nantong from Jinan.

In China, the high-speed train is the major transportation way to go from province to province. The train service is frequent, and tickets can be purchased online. The train runs at 300-400 km/hour.
