MADRID, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Spain will bring a second victim of the Ebola virus from west Africa, it was confirmed on Sunday by the Spanish Ministry of Defense.
The man infected with the virus is Manuel Garcia Viejo, a 69-year-old missionary and doctor, who is the Medical Director of the San Juan de Dios Hospital in the city of Lunsar in Sierra Leone, one of the countries most affected by the virus which has so far claimed over 3,000 lives.
Garcia Viejo, who has formed part of the San Juan de Dios religious order for 52 years and worked in Africa for 30 years, was diagnosed with Ebola on Friday and will return to Spain on Sunday in a specially adapted Hercules aircraft to receive treatment in the Carlos III Hospital in Madrid.
The 69-year-old is the second Spaniard to be brought home after being diagnosed with Ebola following 75-year-old missionary, Miguel Angel Pajares, who was also treated in the Carlos III Hospital in August, before dying of the illness, despite being treated with the experimental ZMapp drug, which was unable to save his life given his already severely weakened state.
